Stellantis Cancels Poland EV Plans, Eyes Germany or Slovakia

Stellantis Cancels Poland EV Plans and Could Shift to Germany or Slovakia

Stellantis, the multinational automaker, has officially canceled plans to build a second electric vehicle (EV) at its factory in Tychy, Poland. This comes after the launch of the Leapmotor B10 electric crossover at the Paris Motor Show last month. The company is now considering moving the production to factories in Eisenach, Germany, or Trnava, Slovakia.

This decision seems tied to two key factors: lower-than-expected demand for the Fiat 500e in Italy and recent European Union (EU) tariffs on Chinese EV imports, which have sparked trade tensions. China has already filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over these tariffs, which could affect Stellantis' joint venture with Leapmotor—a Chinese automaker.

The Polish factory currently produces the Leapmotor T03 city car and gasoline Fiat 500 models, but Stellantis' re-evaluation of its EV production strategy could signal changes amidst these external pressures.

The struggle remains as Stellantis navigates production woes and shrinking profit forecasts for 2024, pushing it to explore alternative production sites in Europe.

Key Points:

  • Stellantis canceled plans for EV production in Poland.
  • Focus shifted to possibly moving the project to Germany or Slovakia.
  • EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs affected Stellantis' joint venture with Leapmotor.
  • Fiat 500e demand continues to be lower than expected.
